White Coats or Black Robes

Peter Kam Fai Cheung SBS

Medicine and law are high-impact fields in society. Learning and practising either discipline is not for everyone as the schools and professional training are highly competitive. I admire those who can study both and can change profession.

Medicine treats illness, prevents disease and promotes public health. Law sets standards, maintain order and resolve conflicts. Wearing white coats or black robes, doctors and lawyers safeguard individual well-being as well as public interests.

Learning medicine or law requires understanding of at least few hundred thousand pieces of information and applying them to solve problems. Relevant information are evidence-based and have to be upgraded over time. While opinions should be accurate and consistent, human cognitive bias or overconfidence is possible.

Before robotic doctors and lawyers are everywhere, there is still the need to learn the knowledge systems in the usual way. I believe understanding of the concept and structure would make learning of the particulars easier. I also believe that constancy of purpose should lead to success in any engaging and meaningful pursuits!
