FADE IN:
INT. NISEKO-ANNUPURI - NIGHT
Visually quiet ski slope made merry with cheerful music from loud speakers hung on chairlift poles. PETER in snowboarding outfit is on the side, filming a lone snowboarder ZENO (20), coming down smoothly and swiftly from the the hill top all the way down the valley.
PETER (V.O.)
What a near-perfect
performance after 4-
hour tuition.
Zeno rejoins Peter near the Annupuri Ski Rental Shop.
PETER
Well done! Do you
want to try that again?
ZENO
(Thinking)
I think that's enough.
PETER
How did you feel coming
all the way down in one
go? Was it fast?
ZENO
(Nodding)
Yes. Quite fast.
FLASHBACK (2 HOURS BEFORE)
EXT. NISEKO-ANNUPURI - DAY
Ski slope. A COACH (44) coaches Peter in the presence of ZENO.
COACH
Snowboarding is no
different from riding
a bicycle. To keep
your balance, you've
to keep moving.
PETER
Yes!
Peter rolls over, stands up and slides again. Both the Coach and Zeno watch Peter attentively.
COACH
That's not bad.
PETER
(Encouraged)
Thank you!
PETER (V.O.)
I've tried to transfer
what I learned in balancing
myself in ice-skating
to snowboarding. Snowboarding is
harder as my feet are
strapped to the
snowboard and I
can't open and close
my feet to get my
centre of gravity.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
But the key is the mindset
to take risk. Before I broke
my ankle in 2009, I
was quite a daredevil.
END FLASHBACK
INT - ROAD - DAY
Coming out of a clinic, Peter checks a What'sApp message.
PETER (V.O.)
Oh, Zeno has passed
his driving test at one
go! This's another skill
he wanted to get!
Peter sends thumps-up and victory symbols.
MONTAGE OF ZENO'S DRIVING EXPERIENCE.
A/ Zeno displays the "P" plate at the front screen and the rear screen of of a Toyoto Previa 2.5 and takes the driver seat. Peter sits in the front passenger seat. Zeno adjusts the seat and the mirrors, tests the gear and the brakes before moving off a parking lot.
B/ Zeno drives slowly in estate roads a couple of times before driving out of the estate, and then to the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. We hear Peter remarking:"...too fast...," "following...too close...", "...that overtaking was unsafe...", "...be cautious of professional drivers..." and "...safe driving is good driving..."
C/ In the company of Peter, and OTHERS, Zeno drives a Eunos 30X, a Beetle 1.8 Turbo, a Mercedes 240E, and a SMART pulse, both day and night, in Hong Kong, Kowloon and NT.
END MONTAGE
EXT. CAR PARK - NIGHT
Zeno parks the Previa neatly inside a parking lot, Peter and his WIFE witnessing.
PETER
I think you can drive
on your own now.
WIFE
You can use the Beetle
if you like.
PETER
It's neither big nor small.
But it's fun to drive.
Zeno looks delighted.
EXT. SAPPORO ROAD - NIGHT
Looking at a tree trunk with few branches against a starry night sky background, Peter finds an angle and takes a photo.
PETER (V.O)
So peaceful and beautiful...
Then, his phone rings.
WIFE (O.S)
(From phone)
Zeno has just had a traffic
accident. The Beetle he
drove collided with a
coach!
PETER (V.O.)
Oh my God, so quick.
WIFE (O.S.)
He wants to know what
he should do next...
PETER
Send me the photos, I'll
get in touch with our
car repairer meanwhile...
Notifications. Peter checks the images.
PETER (V.O.)
Okay, it's a minor one.
Money can solve this
problem. It's great
that my son could also
learn this lesson too.
It should impact on
his safe driving for
many years to come.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd)
I've to defer my visit
to the Sapporo Snow
Festival. Let me use my
warm hotel room as my
remote control command
post!
INT. HOTEL RYOKAN - DAY
Peter talks to someone over the phone.
PETER
It's a narrow and winding
road. The coach driver
wasn't able to keep the
coach within its normal
traffic lane. Zeno might
not have anticipated the
situation on the road
ahead and leave himself
sufficient time and room
to recognize a developing
situation and to react to
that.
WIFE (O.S.)
Yes, although his car
was within its lane, he
didn't have sufficient
thinking and stopping
distance.
PETER
Yes, both drivers drove
without due care and
attention and without
reasonable considerations
of other users using the
road.
WIFE (O.S.)
Yes, Zeno felt he's at
fault too.
PETER
I'll leave it to you and
Zeno to settle the dispute. I'm glad that no one
was injured in the accident. My bottom line is rock-
bottom.
EXT. CAR REPAIRER - NIGHT
Peter takes a photo of the offside fender and bumper of a Beetle.
PETER (V.O.)
Okay. The car has been
repaired and we contributed
to Hong Kong's GDP. Zeno
has learnt a lesson about
taking risk and staying safe!
FADE OUT. The End
