A Parking Lot

  1. FADE IN

  2. Act 1

  3. EXT. CAR PARK, GOVERNMENT OFFICES, CENTRAL - 09:30

  4. In a cyber-green New Beetle, Peter's WIFE is parking as PETER tries not to block her view of the side mirror.

  5. PETER (V.O.): It's her designated car park. From home to office and return is convenient to her.

  6. Recalling.

  7. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): When I was working here in 1985 as Assistant Crown Counsel, I didn't have a parking lot.

  8. Recalling.

  9. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Even when I became a Senior Crown Counsel later, I still wasn't allotted one.

  10. Recalling.

  11. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): If I got one, I might not have joined the Intellectual Property Dept.

  12. Pausing.

  13. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): After going back to my chambers, I'd better drive the cars that I haven't driven for three weeks.

  14. Act 2

  15. FLASHBACK

  16. INT. SITTING ROOM - NIGHT (Oct, 2022)

  17. Working on a laptop, Peter's wife talks to Peter.

  18. WIFE: I'm booking our accommodations in England.

  19. PETER: As we've hired a SUV, make sure parking is available.

  20. EXT. ST IVES, CORNWALL - NIGHT (Nov 4, 2022)

  21. Narrow access road with full roadside parking. Driving a black VW Tiguan, Peter can barely pass through it and stop before a house.

  22. PETER: Oh dear, where can we park?

  23. WIFE: The house owner says parking is available...but there isn't a designated one...

  24. PETER: OMG, we arrive late...And we've to park overnight.

  25. After moving their baggage inside the house, Peter spots a driveway where a boat is stored.

  26. PETER (Cont'd): Perhaps, we just park at the front of the boat's way. I don't think people would go boating late at night.

  27. Having carefully parked, Peter squeezes himself out of the car.

  28. PETER (V.O.): How can we say no to this parking lot! If there's no complaint, I'll let the car stay here until we check out.

  29. EXT. BOURNEMOUTH, DORSET - NIGHT (Nov 6, 2022)

  30. Travel Lodge Waterfront. Peter is trying to squeeze his VW Tiguan into a parking lot in front of the lodge. Peter's wife then discovers something.

  31. WIFE: Oh, this's a metered car park... Let me check in and investigate.

  32. Later, Peter's wife returns with a map in hand.

  33. WIFE (Cont'd): There's free roadside parking in the vicinity.

  34. Later, we see them finding a vacant parking lot by the seafront and studying the P sign: "10am - 7pm, 2 hours, No return within 1 hour".

  35. PETER: Effectively, it means that we can park here from 7pm to noon the next day free of charge.

  36. EXT. LOCKS HEATH, HAMPSHIRE - NIGHT (Nov 8, 2022)

  37. Arriving before a house, a RELATIVE is directing Peter to park his VW Tiguan.

  38. RELATIVE: We can park 4 cars in front of our house...Our neighbour complained that our parking obstructed his 3-point turn...

  39. EXT. MIRRIOT MAIDA VALE, CAMDEN - NIGHT (Nov 9, 2022)

  40. Driving the VW Tiguan, Peter sees the car park entrance.

  41. PETER: Oh, it's blocked. Is parking available here?

  42. WIFE: It says so, on a first-come-first-served basis. Let me go and ask the concierge.

  43. Later, Peter's wife returns.

  44. WIFE (Cont'd): They've one left, at 40 pounds per night...

  45. PETER: So, it's 120 pounds for 3 nights. Let's explore the vicinity before we give in.

  46. Later, at the rear of hotel, we see them parking inside a lot and re-examining the P sign: "8:30 am - 6:30 pm - Pay by phone - quoting location - max stay 2 hours".

  47. INT. HOTEL ROOM - LATER

  48. Smart phones in hand, Peter and his wife are checking the "JustPark" App.

  49. PETER: OMG, when it comes to payment, the App designer doesn't anticipate visitors from Hong Kong. It wouldn't accept our international credit cards!

  50. RETURN TO PRESENT

  51. Act 3

  52. EXT. METERED CAR PARK, SILVERSTRAND - 15:30

  53. Arriving in a dark blue Mercedes, Peter sees many vacant lots.

  54. PETER (V.O.): The road to "success" is dotted with many tempting parking lots.

  55. Reflecting.

  56. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I think we should park where we're, not where we're not.

  57. Recalling.

  58. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): At Camden, it was lucky that our daughter has got a UK debit card, and so we managed to pay by phone in the end.

  59. Parking.

  60. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): After some years, I may find it lucky if I can recognize my car in a parking lot.

  61. THE END

  62. FADE OUT
