Any Windfalls

  1. FADE IN


  2. Act 1


  3. INT. STUDY - 20:00 (YESTERDAY)


  4. PETER picks up a call.


  5. WIFE (From phone): You like thick or thin noodles?

  6. PETER (To phone): Thick ones. You're home already?


  7. WIFE: (From phone): Typhoon signal no. 8 has been up already.


  8. INT. DINING ROOM - 20:30


  9. We see three bowls of thick and thin noodles on the table.


  10. PETER: I thought it'd just be the two of us.


  11. WIFE: Our daughter has returned home. The evening concert she meant to go is postponed to Sunday.


  12. PETER (V.O.): It's a windfall that we'll have dinner a few minutes earlier than usual.


  13. Act 2


  14. INT. BEDROOM - 08:00


  15. Waking up, Peter grabs his smart phone to check the Observatory App.


  16. PETER (V.O.) : Typhoon signal no. 8 is still up. It's a windfall my wife can sleep a little longer.


  17. Later, his wife wakes up to turn on the TV immediately.


  18. WIFE: Oh, the Observatory may lower the typhoon signal no.8 after 9:00am.


  19. PETER: It's a windfall you don't have to leave home now.


  20. WIFE: Do you think if the restaurants in the mall are open?


  21. PETER: I believe so. Let me go and buy breakfast.


  22. INT. LOBBY - 08:30


  23. Peter says "Morning" to a CARETAKER.


  24. PETER (V.O.): Irrespective of the number of the typhoon signal, she has to discharge her duties as usual.


  25. INT. MALL - 08:45


  26. Restaurant counter. STAFF are packing food as Peter waits nearby.


  27. PETER (V.O.): Business as usual.


  28. INT. DINING ROOM - 09:15


  29. Accompanied by KAJI, Peter, his wife and their daughter are having breakfast.


  30. PETER (V.O.): I believe Kaji doesn't expect we'd have breakfast together this morning.


  31. WIFE: I speculated that I might have a day off, but...


  32. We see a TV banner advising that the typhoon signal no. has changed from 8 to 3.


  33. WIFE: I've to be back to the office within two hours.

  34. PETER (V.O.): Working in retirement as a self-employed, I see typhoon signal no. 8 or above impacting adversely on my work schedule.


  35. Later, as his wife leaves home, Peter joins her.


  36. WIFE: Where're you going?


  37. PETER: I'm going to get the files for my court appearance next week.


  38. PETER (V.O.): It's a symbolic gesture to go through the thick and thin with my wife.


  39. EXT. MTR CABIN - 10:30


  40. Crowded.


  41. PETER (V.O.): This's an extraordinary rush hour.


  42. We hear PASSENGER#1 lamenting to PASSENGER#2.


  43. PASSENGER#1: I meant to go to the cinema to watch the movie "Top Gun: Maverick"...


  44. Passenger#2 suppresses a smile.


  45. EXT. STREET - 11:00


  46. No wind and rain. Seeing an old tree, Peter stops to capture a photo.


  47. PETER (V.O.): That the typhoon didn't hit it is probably a windfall to it.


  48. Thinking.


  49. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I hope the homeless people could find shelters during the typhoon hours.


  50. Act 3


  51. INT. STUDY - 17:00


  52. We hear radio news: All typhoon signals are cancelled.


  53. PETER (V.O.): Numbers are shifty data. They don't tell the whole story.


  54. Pausing.


  55. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Workwise, it's a windfall to me that I don't have to wait for tomorrow to get something done.


  56. Pausing.


  57. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Whenever the unexpected happens, I like to believe I'm lucky.


  58. Thinking.


  59. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I'm content with any windfalls.
