"Bing Dwen Dwen"

  1. FADE IN

  2. Act 1

  3. INT. BEDROOM - 00:15

  4. In bed, PETER is typing on his smart phone.

  5. PETER (V.O.): A mail came while I was engaging in creativity.

  6. Pausing.

  7. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): And this isn't the first time I do voluntary work late at night.

  8. INT. BANK- 12:30

  9. Counter. As a STAFF is passing some slips to him, Peter is staring at the table screen.

  10. PETER (V.O.): Her service has met my expectations. Can I give my instant digital feedback?

  11. STAFF: It's for information only. In the 1-10 rating scale, only 9 & 10 are passes, the rests are unacceptable. Someone may call you later.

  12. Act 2

  13. EXT./INT. SHAW AUDITORIUM, HKUST - 14:45

  14. Sunny. Entrance. Peter, wearing a facemask with Chinese characters, is about to enter.

  15. PETER (V.O.): I've forgotten what's the theme of this event.

  16. Entering, Peter sees a cool backdrop depicting winter sports on left and right, a white "Bird's Nest" in the centre, a string of logos and Chinese characters on top.

  17. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Oh, it's an offline and cloud sharing session of the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022.

  18. Seated in the AUDIENCE, Peter listens to VIPs reading their speeches from the podium.

  19. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I'd never stand behind the podium. I'd never read any script. I'd engage and talk to the audience.

  20. After a photo session, some VIPs leave, leaving their best seats vacant.

  21. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I wouldn't do that. To continue to engage stakeholders is the better thing to do.

  22. Later, CHARACTERS on screen begin to share stories.

  23. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The medalists look young. But they sound very mature.

  24. Pausing.

  25. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): It would be nice if there're video clips showing the best moments.

  26. Pausing.

  27. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Nevertheless, the arrangements are seamless. Are these stories pre-recorded?

  28. FLASHBACK

  29. INT. DRAGON CENTRE, SHAM SHUI PO - DAY (1996)

  30. Ice-skating rink. COACH#1 is coaching Peter (42) and his SON#1 (6) to sit on ice and stand up.

  31. PETER (V.O.): Just touching the ice is good, especially in Summer.

  32. The coach then directs them to march across the ice.

  33. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): It's just like marching on ground with a pair of heavy boots.

  34. As they begin to do two-foot forward glide, Peter falls.

  35. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I don't mind.

  36. END FLASHBACK

  37. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): We discontinued our learning when I had to go to Tsinghua U to study in August, and then my wife gave birth to our elder daughter in Sept.

  38. FLASHBACK

  39. INT. MEGABOX, KOWLOON BAY - DAY (2007)

  40. Ice-skating rink. COACH#2 is coaching DAUGHTER#1 (11), SON#2 (9), DAUGHTER#2 (7) and Peter (53) to dip, to do forward swizzles and backward wiggles and to do snowplow stop on two feet.

  41. PETER (V.O.): I'm so glad that I can still do them like my children.

  42. RETURN TO PRESENT

  43. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): And then in 2009, after passing a figure-ice-skating exam, I challenged my limit and fell badly, breaking my right ankle.

  44. Recalling.

  45. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): For the first time, I experienced the worst possible pain.

  46. Recalling.

  47. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Reluctantly, I had to take a 3-month sick leave, and then to relearn how to walk.

  48. Pausing.

  49. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Months later, I did return to the ice-skating rink. But I've become very risk-averse.

  50. On screen is the Q&A session. As some STUDENTS post questions, the characters on screen answers them live.

  51. Act 3

  52. INT. STUDY - 19:00

  53. Smart phone in hand, Peter types on screen.

  54. PETER (V.O.): Two IP friends got in touch with me this afternoon. One reported a success story and the other sent me an event invitation.

  55. As he has just posted his replies, Peter gets prompt feedbacks.

  56. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): One laments that we haven't met for a long time.

  57. Checking Google Photos on screen, Peter selects one featuring him holding a carrier bag against a backdrop.

  58. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Inside is the souvenir "Bing Dwen Dwen" - getting the mascot of Beijing Winter Olympics 2022 is beyond my expectations!

  59. INT. BEDROOM - 23:00

  60. Peter is about to sleep.

  61. PETER (V.O.): Today's voluntary work is particularly satisfying.

  62. THE END

  63. FADE OUT
