Every Day Is the Same?

  1. FADE IN

  2. Act 1

  3. EXT. ESTATE SWIMMING POOL - 20:15

  4. Staring at the dark sky, PETER is swimming backstroke. We see he's the only swimmer.

  5. PETER: I thought last Friday was the only fine day in Oct. I swam at Lo So Shing Beach in Lamma Island.

  6. Recalling.

  7. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd):It turned out that days were also fine throughout this week. And I've set a record of visiting outlying islands five days in a row.

  8. Recalling.

  9. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I was in Pui O Beach, Cheung Chau and Peng Chau. Yesterday, I visited Tong Fuk Beach and Upper Cheung Sha Beach.

  10. Swimming.

  11. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): And today, I visited Tai O - Hong Kong's Venice. I brought along my ukulele.

  12. Thinking.

  13. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Like other days, today was also a great day.

  14. Act 2

  15. FLASHBACK

  16. EXT. ROADS, MUI WO - TAI O - 11:27

  17. Bus route #1 terminus. Following a WOMAN, Peter gets on board a waiting bus.

  18. PETER (V.O.): She was sitting a few rows in front of me in the ferry from Central.

  19. While the woman sits in the middle section, Peter sits at the rear. Later, the bus stops at Pui O San Wai Tsuen.

  20. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I was here on Monday this week.

  21. Later, the bus stops at Lower Cheung Sha Beach.

  22. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): When I visited this beach weeks ago, the driver kindly reminded me to get off here.

  23. Later, the bus stops at Upper Cheung Sha Beach. Peter sees the woman getting off.

  24. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I was here only yesterday. So there're people travelling all the way from Central to do sunbathing here.

  25. Soon, the bus goes past Tong Fuk Beach.

  26. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I got off here yesterday. The stretch of the road ahead is new to me.

  27. When the bus goes past Shek Pik Reservoir, Peter looks excited.

  28. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Have I seen it before, at ground level?

  29. Later, Peter sees signs "Shek Pik Prison" & "Sha Tsui Detention Centre".

  30. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Oh, I've been to these corrective institutions by helicopter. On the ground, officers drive visiting JPs from Shek Pik to Sha Tsui.

  31. Recalling.

  32. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): As an official JP from 1998 to 2014, I visited such institutions four times a year, I looked after the interests of people under custody.

  33. Recalling.

  34. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I even tasted their food and drinks. They're reasonably good. And I thought being in Hong Kong prisons wasn't a big deal.

  35. Pausing.

  36. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Having had two quarantines in the past several weeks, I realize that being confined even at home isn't good.

  37. Pausing.

  38. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): A Quoran has also asked me how to get out of the "Every day is the same" matrix.

  39. Later, the bus arrives at the Tai O terminus. Getting off, Peter looks around.

  40. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I can see the Tai O Market over there. Where is the villa where Sharon and I stayed in 1978?

  41. Peter looks at the opposite direction and sees some high-rise buildings.

  42. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): It must have been redeveloped.

  43. EXT. TAI O - 12:45

  44. Following other TOURISTS, Peter walks towards Tai O Market. Feeling something, Peter checks his shoes and sees the sole of one has come off.

  45. PETER (V.O.): Now? First thing to do here is to buy an instant adhesive.

  46. END FLASHBACK

  47. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): On my return leg, I had a good look of the Lantau Peak and took a photo of it.

  48. Thinking.

  49. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I thought a lot of my classmates Chan King-chau and Wu Shue-fun who were struck dead up there in 1974. They're forever young.

  50. Act 3

  51. EXT. ESTATE SWIMMING POOL - CONTINUOUS

  52. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Unlike Venice, Tai O doesn't provide the ambience for anyone to play anything. It's okay I don't do the same every day.

  53. Pausing.

  54. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): But I had delicious "Baby Oyster Soup" and "Tai O Donut", sight-seeing aside.

  55. Thinking.

  56. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): When every day seems the same, one has stopped noticing the different things that have happened.

  57. Reflecting.

  58. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I take every day as a present. I make something happen so that each day isn't the same as the next.

  59. Leaving, Peter thanks the three LIFEGUARDS who have been watching him.

  60. THE END
