Footprints On the Sand

  1. FADE IN

  2. Act 1

  3. EXT. PUI O BEACH, LANTAU - 12:00

  4. Carrying a red bag and an ukulele, Peter walks along a road dotted with cow dungs.

  5. PETER (V.O.): Familiar sights when I was living in Tin Sum San Tsuen as a country boy in the 1960s.

  6. Pausing.

  7. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Moments before I got off at the Pui O San Wai Tsuen bus stop, there was a majestic buffalo walking along the road and the bus driver had to blow the horn to alert it.

  8. Seeing a signage "Pui O Beach", Peter smiles and walks on.

  9. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): At last, I'm here again.

  10. At the foot of rolling hills, Peter sees a beautiful half-curving beach.

  11. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The Pui O Beach looks brand new to me...

  12. Peter steps on the black and yellow sand.

  13. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Did I leave my footprints on the sand?

  14. Act 2

  15. EXT. PUI O BEACH, LANTAU - CONTINUOUS

  16. Low tide. Waves crash on shore and water slides back down. Peter sees a red and yellow flag.

  17. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): There's lifeguard service. Good!

  18. Walking towards beach tables at one end, Peter sits in one under the shade.

  19. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I must practise playing ukulele first.

  20. Taking out a song sheet with chord shapes, Peter begins to play the song "The Moon Represents My Heart".

  21. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Ha, the EM chord is easy to play on guitar but hard on ukulele.

  22. Later, Peter plays the first verse of "Fly Me to the Moon" in fingerstyle.

  23. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I play better each time.

  24. We hear brighter sounds from Peter's ukulele.

  25. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Okay! That's enough for today. Let me go swimming.

  26. Towing his cyber-green buoy, Peter swims across the whole swimming area.

  27. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Last time when I was here, I dared not enter the water.

  28. Swimming.

  29. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): It's taken me decades to improve my swimming skills and to build up my confidence.

  30. Returning to the beach, Peter sees a small tent.

  31. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Ours was a bit bigger than that.

  32. FLASHBACK

  33. EXT. PUI O BEACH, LANTAU - DAY (June, 1973)

  34. Guided by KAI (19), Peter (19), CLASSMATES#1 (19) and #2 (21) help set up a tent.

  35. PETER (V.O.): We're awaiting our results of HKU matriculation exams. All want to be admitted to HKU, the fallback being CUHK.

  36. Chatting.

  37. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I've already secured a bartender job in Lido at Repulse Bay. I'm so glad that I could join the camping before working long hours again.

  38. When night falls, they pee happily together at the shoreline, before squeezing to sleep inside the tent.

  39. END FLASHBACK

  40. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I did manage to get some sleep that at the darkest hour.

  41. Pausing

  42. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): HKU rejected all of our applications. While CUHK admitted Kai and others, it rejected mine.

  43. Pausing.

  44. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Wanting to try again in 1974, I quitted catering and began teaching in Kam Tin from Sept, 1973.

  45. Pausing.

  46. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I still have regular contacts with Kai who is doing good business in Macau. But I've lost contact with the others.

  47. Recalling.

  48. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): In Sept 1973, one found a cheap Kam Tin accommodation for me. And later, the other gave me two books on Philosophy.

  49. Sighing.

  50. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Yes, a lot of things have changed.

  51. Act 3

  52. EXT. PUI O BEACH, LANTAU - CONTINUOUS

  53. Picking up his belongings, Peter goes to the showers.

  54. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Having a good time then, I didn't know it'd take me almost five decades to revisit Pui O Beach.

  55. Peter goes to the changing room.

  56. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Still, I try to stay as near and close to the moments of my first camping experience here.

  57. Thinking.

  58. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Between then and now, I've struggled a lot and achieved a lot. Now, I'm reliving the mood in a new way.

  59. Walking to the other end and leaving his footprints on the sand, Peter calmly appreciates a herd of resident buffalos.
