FADE IN.
Act 1
INT. SITTING ROOM - 13:30
PETER is listening to Apple FM, we hear Gerry and the Pacemakers singing: Don't you, don't you worry darling, do you know I'll be there...
PETER (V.O.): It's one of my favourite oldies.
Then, we hear the DJ talking: The song was originally written by Bobby Darin in 1960...
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Is that right? Not by an English band?
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Was he the singer who popularised the song "Beyond the Sea" written by a French composer?
Peter surfs the web with his smartphone.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Bobby Darin covered Charles Trenet's song "La Mer". The version in the movie "Finding Nemo" was covered by Robbie Williams..
Peter in in thoughts.
Act 2
FLASHBACK
INT. PETER'S FAMILY HOME - DAY (1970)
Sitting by a portable transistor radio, Peter (16) is listening to hit songs. After a nice intro, we hear a youthful voice singing: You and I must make a pact. We must bring salvation back. Where there's love, I'll be there...
PETER (V.O.): He sings with a high and light, yet expressive voice.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I wish I could have his voice type and range...I can't be a good singer.
EXT. COUNTRY ROADS, BRISTISH ISLES - DAY (1986)
Peter (32) and SHARON (31) are motoring. Inserting a cassette into the car's audio system, we hear a string instrumental intro of the older "I'll be There" song.
PETER (V.O.): A nice riff.
We hear a male voice singing:...I miss you. And in my dreams I kiss you...Don't you worry darling, I'll be there."
RETURN TO PRESENT
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): When Gerry & the Pacemakers performed live in Hong Kong in 1999, I supported them.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): As to Bobby Dorin, I only learned about him months ago, when I tried to find out who wrote the guitar instrumental "Come September".
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): He and Sandra Dee co-starred in the 1961 film "Come September" too.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): As to his upbringing, one intriguing information I read was that his "sister" was his mother, and his "mother" was his grandma.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): He was creative; but he died in 1973 at the age of 37.
FLASHBACK
INT. STUDIO - DAY (A week ago)
Peter is listening to Apple FM, we hear Barry Manilow singing:"...I write the songs to make the whole world sing. I write the song of love and special things. I write the song that make the young girl cry. I write the songs. I write the songs..."
PETER (Singing): ...I'm music, I write the songs.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The song is very well written from intro to outro. The pre-chorus builds the song up and the chorus is catchy.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd):If I don't compose any songs, I wouldn't appreciate the song's structure and why it's such a good song.
Then, we hear the DJ talking: The song was originally written by Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys...
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd):Is that right?
RETURN TO PRESENT
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): When the Beach Boys came to Hong Kong in 2015 and backed by the Hong Kong Philharmonic, I supported them.
Recalling.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): But they didn't sing "I Write the Songs".
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): All along, I've only heard Barry Manilow's version.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): So hearing isn't believing.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): And since I've begun writing my own songs, I don't like to sing songs written by others.
Act 3
INT. SITTING ROOM - 15:45
Good music in the background.
PETER (V.O.): For all my songs, they're raw and real.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): My works can be better. I'll be there someday.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): For other eventualities, just think of me and I'll be there.
Tapping a screen icon, Peter listens to Bobby Dorin's "I'll be there".
THE END.
