Keys to Serenity

  1. FADE IN

  2. Act 1

  3. INT. STUDIO - 10:00

  4. PETER is watching an online piano tutorial on an iPad Mini.

  5. PETER (V.O.): I'm keen to learn the fingering.

  6. Pausing the video clip, Peter plays some notes, rather awkwardly.

  7. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Note by note, phrase by phrase. I know I can do it.

  8. Peter rewinds the video clip, plays it and practises his fingering again.

  9. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I'm a visual learner. I've got the A section of the song!

  10. Practising.

  11. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I believe I can play the AABA structure of "Misty" today.

  12. Act 2

  13. INT. DINING ROOM - 11:15

  14. Peter puts McDonald breakfast sets on the table.

  15. Pausing.

  16. PETER (V.O.): Before I went to get the takeaways, I had squeezed the time to practise the song's A section again.

  17. As Peter's WIFE is unpacking the takeaways, Peter takes the piano seat.

  18. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): At home now, I'm the only one who plays the piano.

  19. Pausing.

  20. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I've the tremendous desire for whatever self-improvement.

  21. Playing.

  22. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): My wife and our younger daughter haven't heard me playing any jazz ballad before.

  23. Pausing.

  24. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): They may think that I can only play the same old songs.

  25. Playing.

  26. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Incidentally, they're my favourites. I've been wondering if I'd ever get tired of them.

  27. Playing.

  28. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): My hand-eye coordination and my listening skills are improving.

  29. Pausing.

  30. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): I know many successful composers use the piano as the main instrument to create their works.

  31. Thinking.

  32. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): As the notes are laid out in the consecutive order on the keyboard, it's probably the best instrument for songwriting.

  33. Pausing.

  34. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Without a background in playing the piano, the songs I've composed are raw.

  35. Pausing.

  36. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Having composed one piano piece, I find the piano having a wider range of notes for composing harmonies and accompaniments than the guitar.

  37. Recalling.

  38. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): While I was in my teens, I didn't have access to the piano. And my $30 guitar couldn't work wonders.

  39. Recalling.

  40. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): As for my children, I gave them equal opportunities to learn music and instruments. But only our younger son plays the piano very well.

  41. INT. STUDIO - 18:30

  42. We hear Peter playing the AABA structure of "Misty".

  43. PETER (V.O.): The fingering isn't easy for me; but I've done it.

  44. Tapping an app, Peter creates an AI drawing, depicting black-and-white keys in a colourful context.

  45. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): My interpretation is that black-and-white stuff can bring colour to life.

  46. Pausing.

  47. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): With internet accessibility, content variety and online flexibility, there's no excuse not to learn something new each day.

  48. Pausing.

  49. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Am I too old to learn playing the piano?

  50. Thinking.

  51. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): While "better late than never", the best is "don't be late".

  52. Act 3

  53. INT. STUDIO - 23:00

  54. We hear Peter playing "Misty" on piano again.

  55. PETER (V.O.): Apart from the performing skill, I've also learned how to compose a great melody and harmony.

  56. Pausing.

  57. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Playing the piano, I feel it's soothing effect and get a sense of tranquility.

  58. Peter stares at the black and white keys.

  59. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): They're keys to serenity.

  60. FADE OUT
