Missed Connections

  1. FADE IN

  2. Act 1

  3. INT. LIVING ROOM - 12:00

  4. Filled with travel souvenirs from Tottori. PETER is checking an image depicting him playing a yellow grand piano in public.

  5. PETER (V.O): On October 3, 2024, my wife and I returned to the Tottori Airport to collect our rental car from Times.

  6. Recalling.

  7. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): While waiting for Times to transact the business, I can't resist the impulse to play the grand piano decorated with manga characters.

  8. Recalling.

  9. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): I was playing "A Summer Place"; and I noticed a pretty woman taping my debut public performance.

  10. Smiling.

  11. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): I played pretty well and got an applause from her...

  12. Pausing.

  13. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): I wouldn't be there playing the piano but for our folly yesterday - the first time we missed our scheduled flight from Haneda to Tottori.

  14. Act 2

  15. FLASHBACK

  16. INT. HANEDA AIRPORT - 13:45 (Oct 2, 2024)

  17. ANA reception. Peter and his wife speak to STAFF#1 who directs them to speak to STAFF#2.

  18. STAFF#2: The next flight will arrive Tottori at 17:45. Is it okay?

  19. PETER & WIFE: Yes!

  20. Staff#2 begins to type on her computer.

  21. PETER (to wife): It's good that we'd only arrive just hours late.

  22. WIFE: We've already paid for our onsen hotel, including deluxe dinner tonight and breakfast tomorrow.

  23. Staff#2 seeks STAFF#3's endorsement to proceed further.

  24. PETER: We've got to inform the car rental and the hotel of our delayed arrival....

  25. Then, staff#2 presents them with air tickets.

  26. PETER & WIFE: Just like that? No administration fee?

  27. STAFF#2: You need to reclaim your bags at Counter 13 and re-check in them.

  28. Peter and his wife nod enthusiastically.

  29. PETER (to wife): We had caused lots of inconvenience to others.

  30. After claiming back their bags, they re-check in them.

  31. WIFE: Let me call our Japanese-speaking daughter to relate the messages to the car rental and the hotel.

  32. Having had some communications via the mobile, Peter's wife talks to him.

  33. WIFE (Cont'd): Our daughter related that Times closes at 17:00. We can only collect the car tomorrow...When should we collect it?

  34. PETER: Around noon...we'll check out at 10.00 and have to make our way to the Airport.

  35. Having communicated further, Peter talks to Peter again.

  36. WIFE: Times would charge us one day less...I don't expect that. Separately, we need to find an alternative means to the hotel.

  37. Peter's wife surfs the web with her mobile.

  38. WIFE (Cont'd): There's a 17:55 coach from the Tottori Airport to a railway station near our hotel...or we can take the indirect or time-consuming train...

  39. PETER: For domestic flights in Japan, we'd be able to take the coach...and if we miss that, we'll take the train...

  40. WIFE: The cost of taking a taxi for a 35-km ride in Japan is prohibitive...

  41. INT. TOTTORI AIRPORT - 17:50

  42. Having got their bags, they see two car rentals are still open.

  43. PETER: Perhaps, we can hire a car for one day...But I also see a coach waiting at the door...

  44. They rush to check the signs of the coach.

  45. WIFE: This is it! We're still in time. Let me buy the tickets...

  46. After loading their bags into the coach haul, Peter sees his wife joining with tickets in hand.

  47. EXT. A BUS STOP NEAR A DEAD QUIET RAILWAY STATION - 18:40.

  48. No taxi. Just two souls with their bags under the rain.

  49. PETER: It seems that waiting isn't an option. Call our daughter to call the hotel to call a taxi to come here to pick us up.

  50. Peter's wife calls their daughter.

  51. RETURN TO PRESENT

  52. Act 3

  53. INT. LIVING ROOM - 21:30

  54. Peter inserts an AI drawing entitled "Missed Connections ..." to a draft in his Surface.

  55. PETER (V.O): In salvaging our operations, we realise the importance of communication. A taxi did come and we're in time for dinner.

  56. Thinking.

  57. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Facing challenges together with my wife and relying on our lovely daughter during tough times strengthen our bonds.

  58. Reflecting.

  59. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd):  Life can be unpredictable. Being able to adapt to changes can lead to unexpected outcomes and lasting memories.

  60. FADE OUT

  61. THE END
