Waking up, PETER checks a phone notification.
PETER (V.O.): Oh, my Google One storage is 99% full. Should I upgrade my plan or delete files to free up space?
We see on screen that a great percentage of Peter's storage is photos.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I can export them to external hard drives.
Peter then scrolls up and down the screen.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): But a photo is worth a thousand words, and a memory is priceless.
We see on screen Peter upgrading his plan and paying.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): But I should declutter digitally too...
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): When I travelled internationally, I'd use my 4th smartphone. But it wasn't effective and efficient.
Act 2
FLASHBACK
EXT. RITSURI GARDEN, KAGAWA - DAY (30 MARCH, 2023)
Walking with his WIFE, Peter discovers something about his smartphone.
PETER (V.O.): How come there's no wifi connection? I've a Japanese sim card in my 4th smartphone.
Opening his handbag, Peter checks a smartphone inside.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Oh, there's no more battery.
Peter then connects it with a mobile charger.
WIFE: Why don't you just change the sim card?
PETER: I once lost the first sim card, and that caused inconvenience.
Pausing.
PETER (Cont'd): On another occasion, I got confused with my smartphones and had to pay a lot for international roaming.
EXT. FUSHIMI - INARI SHRINE - KYOTO - NIGHT (30 MARCH, 2023)
Following other TOURISTS, Peter is hiking beneath the orange torii gates alone.
PETER (V.O.): The last time I saw my wife was at the main shrine. We're taking photos separately.
Thinking.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Having passed about a hundred torii gates now, I don't see any sign of my wife.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I haven't got any calls or messages from her either...
Peter then focuses on the top right hand corner of his smartphone.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): OMG, there's no internet connection...
Peter stops to check his 4th smartphone inside his handbag.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Oh, no more battery!
Quickly, Peter connects it with another mobile charger, turns on hotspot sharing and checks messages.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Oh, my wife has called me and sent messages to me many times!
Immediately, Peter makes an WhatsApp call to his wife.
WIFE (From phone): For the past 30 minutes, I've been trying hard to find you and get in touch with you!
EXT. TOMBS AT NIPPLE MOUNTAIN - DAY (YESTERDAY)
Chatting, Peter's BROTHERS refer to their MUM.
BROTHER#1: Mum got a fraud call that I was detained, and someone would go to her to collect the bail money.
BROTHER#2: She has actually prepared piles of cash, although no one has shown up yet.
END FLASHBACK
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): On phones, my Mum has a land line and mobiles. She doesn't use the third mobile and service I bought her.
Thinking.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The more phone lines she has, the more scam calls she gets.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Let me reclaim just the mobile line, but she can still see the phone photos. I've to be smart this time.
Act 3
INT. BEDROOM - 22:00
Peter is setting of a new smart phone.
PETER (V.O.): Today, I've bought my 5th smartphone. It's inexpensive but has more functions than my expensive old ones.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.): My 1st smartphone is for personal use, my 2nd one for business and my 3rd one for use in mainland China.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I'd retire my 4th one and just use it to listen to internet radio. I'll use my 5th one for international travel and media consumption.
Inserting a ticket depicting Ritsuri Garden to cover a serial no. label of the smartphone, Peter looks content.
