Now Is the Present

  1. FADE IN

  2. Act 1

  3. INT. STUDY - 12:30

  4. Looking out of the window, PETER sees a cloudy sky.

  5. PETER (V.O.): Today doesn't seem to be a good day to go to the beach.

  6. Pausing.

  7. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Should I wait for a better day? But I've to work tomorrow...

  8. Pausing.

  9. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): And there's no guarantee of better days ahead.

  10. Pausing.

  11. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Isn't the best preparation for the future is to live as if there's none?

  12. Packing his swimming gear, Peter exits.

  13. Act 2

  14. EXT. SILVERSTRAND BEACH - 13:30

  15. Arriving near a lifeguard tower, Peter sees flags flying - a red one and a red-yellow one.

  16. PETER (V.O.): I don't quite know what they signify.

  17. Suspecting.

  18. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Has the red flag been hoisted? But the lifeguard is still in the tower.

  19. Wearing a swimming brief and a pair of goggles, Peter focuses on the beach water.

  20. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I didn't bring my wet suit and safety buoy. I don't think I need them.

  21. Peter takes a deep breath.

  22. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Wanting to swim now, I've cognitive bias.

  23. Quicky, Peter swims towards one of the floating platforms in the swimming area.

  24. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Stay focus with what's in front of me, I can cope with any hazards.

  25. Soon, Peter grabs a ladder bar and climbs up onto an empty floating platform.

  26. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Here I'm, my sweet spot in Silverstrand.

  27. Lying flat on the rocking-and-rolling swim platform, Peter looks up at the sky.

  28. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Today, I don't need to put on sunblock. The ambience now is quite different.

  29. We hear the songs of the wind and of the sea.

  30. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Now is the moment, and I'll never have the same moment twice.

  31. Pausing.

  32. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Setting myself free here, I've a spontaneous transcendental feel.

  33. Pausing.

  34. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): But if the rocking and rolling here become more exciting, I'll retreat to the shore without delay.

  35. Pausing.

  36. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): In any event, I shouldn't expose myself in the cold for too long for fear of suffering from hypothermia.

  37. Pausing.

  38. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I worry about these as I know I've only one life to live.

  39. We hear some indistinct sounds in a distance.

  40. SOMEONE (O.S): Hello, hello, hello...

  41. Tracing the source of the calling, Peter sees SWIMMER#1 emerging from the water near the outer safety buoy line about 30 meter away.

  42. PETER (V.O.): Has he got a problem? Is he calling me for help?

  43. PETER: Are you calling...

  44. Peter then sees SWIMMER#2 emerging from the water, joining Swimmer#1.

  45. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): A false alarm.

  46. And we hear Swimmers#1 & 2 chatting: You say you're 75-year old...

  47. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): They're old but strong. And they won't miss any moment.

  48. Leaving the floating platform, Peter swims back to the shore.

  49. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Breathe, now is the moment I know for sure.

  50. When Peter is having a bath, we hear a public announcement: The red flag has been hoisted...

  51. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): If I heard that earlier, I might have second thoughts...But now for me, the wind and current have done and gone.

  52. Act 3

  53. INT. STUDY - 23:00

  54. Peter is in thoughts.

  55. PETER (V.O.): Living life, there's no rehearsal.

  56. Pausing.

  57. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Life is a sequence of never-again moments, I treasure each one of them.

  58. Pausing.

  59. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I strive to live the moments authentically as the future is uncertain.

  60. Peter checks his profile on his smart phone screen. We see: Treat the present as a present.

  61. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery. Now is the present.

  62. THE END
