Act 1
INT. BEDROOM - 22:45
Working on a laptop, PETER looks at two group photos on his mobile from time to time.
PETER (V.O): These images were taken an hour ago, after our last Korean lesson.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): For the past 18 weeks or so, my wife and I have spent lots of effort to learn some basic Korean words and phrases in class.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): While my wife did very well, I know, and others can see, that I've difficulty to catch up.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Originally, I thought it was great that my wife and I could be classmates.
Act 2
FLASHBACK
INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY (Late April 2024)
A Korean textbook in hand, Peter pronounces some Korean vowels and consonants.
PETER (V.O): Are there apps that can help me learn Korean better and faster?
Peter surfs the web with his mobile.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): It seems that Duolingo is quite popular.
Having downloaded the app, Peter takes the bite-sized sessions.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Oh, it uses algorithms to continuously assess my progress and adjust the content and level of difficulty.
Day after day, Peter continues to use the Duolingo app to learn Korean.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Duolingo incorporates game-like elements such as points, levels and achievements to create an enjoyable, motivating learning experience.
Later, we see Peter picking up Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German and Japanese.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): I know what I don't know.
INT. LIVING ROOM - 09:45 (Today)
Mobile in hand, Peter reviews a recording. We hear Peter pronouncing some Korean words.
PETER (V.O): This is my last oral homework to be sent to my teacher, as we'll have our last lesson tonight.
Peter sends it off via his mobile.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): I've exercised my best endeavours.
Soon, Peter gets a remark and a two-star grading.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): I used to get one out of three.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): In my first oral exam, I had to retake it. For the second and third ones, I did reasonably well, as a late learner.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): For written exercises, I've difficulty to recognize and write the Korean characters, not to mention the grammar.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): On the other hand, my wife can do all that I can't.
We see Peter doing his written homework by copying answers done by his wife.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): I try to understand why those are right answers.
INT. LECTURE ROOM - HKUSPACE - 20:00
Korean class. Referring to a textbook, worksheets and words shown on Google Translate of his mobile, Peter, together with STUDENTS in the images, listen attentively to a recording in Korean.
PETER (V.O): I can only understand the context but not the particulars.
Then, the TEACHER poses questions to STUDENTS#1-3 (20s) and they all can give correct answers.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): The teacher is most kind to me. If I'm picked, I've to eat humble pie.
Later, the teacher distributes the marked essays to Peter and his WIFE.
WIFE: Let me see your essay in Korean.
His wife reads Peter's essay.
WIFE (Cont'd): OMG, you've even included "Hello...Goodbye..."
PETER (V.O): I've no idea what marks I'd get in the final exam in early Sept.
RETURN TO PRESENT
Act 3
INT. BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS
Peter inserts an AI drawing entitled "Senior Speaks..." to a draft.
PETER (V.O): I rely on my wife to help me understand the course materials, the work sheets and the oral exchanges, although I wrote the essay myself.
Thinking.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): As an old language learner, I need to be flexible and take an approach that works best for me. I won't repeat the course.
Reflecting.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Being able to learn at my own pace using Duolingo with AI facilitation is a better fit for my learning style.
