Act 1
INT. STUDIO - 16:30
At a corner, PETER is cleaning a Yamaha Clavinova.
PETER (V.O.) : This Clavinova is 35 years old.
As Peter touches the keyboard, we hear low-volume electric piano sounds.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Should I connect it to an amplifier?
Pushing the volume button to "Maximum", Peter touches the keyboard again. We hear some loud distorted sounds from left and right.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Oh, yes, there's a speaker on the right. It has reactivated again!
Adjusting the volume button to "Medium", Peter plays some chords and melody awkwardly, and we hear medium-volume sounds.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I compose my songs with my guitars. I use guitars to accompany them.
Peter continues to play chords and melody on the Clavinova.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I've never performed my songs with the piano.
Act 2
FLASHBACK
INT. SHAW AUDITORIUM, HKUST - 12:45 (YESTERDAY)
Beside a grand piano, two STUDENTS are singing a song before a dozen VIPS.
PETER (V.O.): Their public performance mean to entertain.
Peter works some steps to the beat.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): But the melody and lyrics of their song don't appeal to me.
When performance ends, a STAFF approaches Peter.
STAFF: Would you like to perform? I can play the piano to accompany you.
PETER (unenthusiastic): I only sing my songs...
PETER (Cont'd): It's really hard to collaborate without any preparation.
STAFF: I understand.
PETER: I used to let those performing with me have the sound recordings and the song sheets beforehand.
END FLASHBACK
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I wouldn't mind performing myself if I can play the piano reasonably well.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Yes, I should practise performing my songs with the piano.
Later, Peter turns on a mini hifi system and we hear oldies.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I haven't listened to CDs for months.
After hearing the song "San Francisco", we hear the instrumental of "A Summer Place".
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): This musical piece is timeless. I wish I could compose one like it.
Surfing the web, Peter finds the name of the composer of "A Summer Place" .
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): He's Max Steiner (1888-1971). He scored "A Summer Place" in 1959.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): So, he wrote the musical piece at the age of 71.
Peter reads Max Steiner's biography on screen.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Wow, he scored many Broadway and Hollywood music.
Reading.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): In the cover version by Percy Faith, his "A Summer Place" spent nine weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 1960.
Taping YouTube, Peter listens to Percy Faith's version of "A Summer Place".
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Yes, this is the version I've been listening...
Peter surfs the web again.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The original version recorded for the film "A Summer Place" was done by Hugo Winterhalter.
Finding Hugo Winterhalter's version on YouTube, Peter listens to it.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Ah, it's easy-listening. The intro of Percy Faith's version is more captivating.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): No one has ever re-arranged or done a cover version of my songs.
Act 3
INT. STUDIO - CONTINOUS
Peter gets his white Yamaha electric bass guitar.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Doing music, I don't mean to entertain the audience. I aim to inspire all to be creative.
Peter puts on the book stand a children's piano song book.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): In my songs, I sing what I mean in my lyrics, and my music reflects how I feel.
Peter captures an image of the Clavinova with his smart phone.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): My raw and real stuff aren't perfect, but at least I'm true to myself. And I've the courage to be creative.
Peter plays the old Yamaha Clavinova again.
