The Cream

  1. FADE IN

  2. Act 1

  3. INT. BEDROOM - 19:00

  4. Watching a YouTube video clip with an iPad Mini, PETER plays along with it with a black and white viola electric bass guitar.

  5. PETER (V.O.): I can now play the bass lines of "Sunshine of Your Love" reasonably well.

  6. Seeing the opening image of the next video clip, Peter puts aside the guitar to watch.

  7. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The Cream is playing "Sunshine of Your Love" in their Reunion Concert.

  8. On screen, we see three old bandmates on stage. One plays drums, one on bass, and one on solo.

  9. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): A three-piece band is a rare configuration in rock music. Each bandmate is indispensable.

  10. From screen, we hear hard rock music.

  11. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): They're all masters in playing their own musical instruments.

  12. Watching.

  13. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I'm still learning the basics.

  14. Act 2

  15. INT. BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS

  16. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): While I was studying in Form 1, I heard the Cream's song "Sunshine of Your Love" and found it very different.

  17. Pausing.

  18. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Then, I learned that the genre was psychedelic rock.

  19. Pausing.

  20. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): About a year later, I heard the band's other song called "White Room".

  21. Watching.

  22. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): But I like "Sunshine of Your Love" more.

  23. Pausing.

  24. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Apart from the distinct bass riffs, it's an explicit love song.

  25. Researching with a smart phone.

  26. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Jack Bruce, the bassist and vocalist, was the composer of the two songs.

  27. Watching.

  28. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Then, I heard no more of the band's songs.

  29. Researching.

  30. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The band was founded in 1966 and was disbanded in 1968.

  31. Recalling.

  32. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): It was only in 1968 that I bought my first acoustic guitar at HK$30. There was no way I could play the band's music with it.

  33. The clip ends.

  34. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): It was recorded live in 2005. How are they now?

  35. Researching.

  36. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Oh, Jack Bruce, died at age 71 in 2014. Ginger Baker, the drummer, died at age 80 in 2019.

  37. Pausing.

  38. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Eric Clapton, age 77, is the only surviving bandmate...In 2014, I bought an expensive Fender Eric Clapton Stratocaster.

  39. Tapping the iPad Mini, Peter plays another video clip on "Sunshine of Your Love". We see three young bandmates performing on stage.

  40. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): It's a live recording of the band's 1968 Farewell Concert.

  41. Watching.

  42. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I can't recognize their young looks. Oh, Jack Bruce would play a viola bass guitar. A long-scale bass guitar is heavy and hard to play.

  43. Pausing.

  44. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Why did they call themselves "the Cream"?

  45. Researching and reading.

  46. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): They were already considered the cream of the crop in the exploding British music scene then.

  47. Watching.

  48. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): To sustain being the cream of the crop is no easy feat though.

  49. Pausing.

  50. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Watching the band's 2005 and 1968 performances in 2022, I'm reliving the past, as a fan.

  51. Act 3

  52. INT. BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS

  53. PETER (V.O.): Sometimes, I'd wonder if I was born a few years earlier, what would I have become?

  54. Thinking.

  55. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): We're born different and our nurture are different. If we optimize our potential and quality, we can be our own cream.

  56. Reflecting.

  57. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): That's already a big deal. I don't need to become a rock star.

  58. Peter takes a photo of the musical instruments near him.

  59. THE END

  60. .

  61. FADE OUT
