FADE IN
Act 1
INT. BEDROOM - 08:30
Sitting up in bed, PETER checks a WhatsApp message in a chatgroup.
PETER (V.O): My composer and conductor friend is so kind to share an article on achieving excellence.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): He's dedicated to music, has composed over100 works and is renowned in the field.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): When I began composing, he encouraged and guided me. He and my late wife Sharon were music graduates at HKCU.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Whenever I go back my first matrimonial home in NT, I'd play the piano and hope that Sharon could listen.
Peter types his reaction on screen.
Act 2
EXT. SILVERSTRAND BAY - 14:00
Cloudy. Waves crashing against the shore. A red bag flaps in the wind.
PETER (V.O): The typhoon is hanging around. The temperature has dropped.
In a blue wetsuit and with a green swim buoy, Peter wades into the water.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): The waves vary in intensity and shape, just like jazz improvisation within a structure.
Braving the waves alone within the swimming area.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Each wave is distinct, just like every jazz performance's own character.
INT. STUDIO - 16:15
Peter sits before a Yamaha Clavinova.
PETER (V.O): Time to learn and practise.
Tapping YouTube, Peter types "jazz piano" into the search bar and checks the results.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): I don't see any familiar ones.
Clicking on one clip causally, we hear the instructor playing a series of jazz chords and melodies.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): This one is too difficult for me.
As he's about to end the session, Peter hears:...take on the challenge...
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Yes, why not?
Peter tries to follow along, but his fingers stumble over keys.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Wait, what was that? I can't keep up.
Pausing the clip and rewinding, Peter replays the section and watches closely.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Okay, one step at a time.
Having repeated the chord progressions and notes a few times, Peter looks pleased.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): I've been using guitars to compose my songs. I hope I can compose jazz-like songs with the keyboard before long.
Taking a break, Peter stares at the Clavinova.
PETER (V.O): It was a new product back in 1987. I wanted to buy it as it wouldn't go out of tune. Sharon supported me.
INT. LIVING ROOM - 18:15
Appearing. Peter is pleased to see his WIFE watching the K-drama: Encounter.
PETER: Which Episode are you watching? I want to catch up.
WIFE: I'd better go and prepare dinner now. You watch...Which Episode?
PETER: ...The scene is like a modern Romeo & Juliet masquerade...
Peter's wife finds the scene for Peter to watch.
FLASHBACK
INT. TUNG LOK CINEMA, YUEN LONG - NIGHT
The screen is showing Romeo & Juliet encountering each other in a masqurade. Peter (15) immerses himself in the story.
PETER (V.O): What a romantic moment, capturing the excitment of young love...
Pausing.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): It sets in motion the events that will lead to the tragic conclusion.
RETURN TO PRESENT
Act 3
INT. BEDROOM - 21:30
Smooth jazz music. Peter inserts an AI drawing entitled "The Jazz of Memories..." to a draft in his laptop.
PETER (V.O): I like Jazz, as it's improvisational, conjuring a sense of spantaneity and emotion.
Thinking.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Jazz often plays with harmonies and dissonances, finding beauty in both.
Reflecting.
PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Memories, like jazz, can be fluid and complex. Mine resonates with the rhythm and unpredictability of life.
