The Jazz of Memories

FADE IN

  1.

  2. Act 1

  3.

  4. INT. BEDROOM - 08:30

  5.

  6. Sitting up in bed, PETER checks a WhatsApp message in a chatgroup.

  7.

  8. PETER (V.O): My composer and conductor friend is so kind to share an article on achieving excellence.

  9.

  10. Pausing.

  11.

  12. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): He's dedicated to music, has composed over100 works and is renowned in the field.

  13.

  14. Pausing.

  15.

  16. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): When I began composing, he encouraged and guided me. He and my late wife Sharon were music graduates at HKCU.

  17.

  18. Pausing.

  19.

  20. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Whenever I go back my first matrimonial home in NT, I'd play the piano and hope that Sharon could listen.

  21.

  22. Peter types his reaction on screen.

  23.

  24. Act 2

  25.

  26. EXT. SILVERSTRAND BAY - 14:00

  27.

  28. Cloudy. Waves crashing against the shore. A red bag flaps in the wind.

  29.

  30. PETER (V.O): The typhoon is hanging around. The temperature has dropped.

  31.

  32. In a blue wetsuit and with a green swim buoy, Peter wades into the water.

  33.

  34. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): The waves vary in intensity and shape, just like jazz improvisation within a structure.

  35.

  36. Braving the waves alone within the swimming area.

  37.

  38. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Each wave is distinct, just like every jazz performance's own character.

  39.

  40. INT. STUDIO - 16:15

  41.

  42. Peter sits before a Yamaha Clavinova.

  43.

  44. PETER (V.O): Time to learn and practise.

  45.

  46. Tapping YouTube, Peter types "jazz piano" into the search bar and checks the results.

  47.

  48. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): I don't see any familiar ones.

  49.

  50. Clicking on one clip causally, we hear the instructor playing a series of jazz chords and melodies.

  51.

  52. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): This one is too difficult for me.

  53.

  54. As he's about to end the session, Peter hears:...take on the challenge...

  55.

  56. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Yes, why not?

  57.

  58. Peter tries to follow along, but his fingers stumble over keys.

  59.

  60. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Wait, what was that? I can't keep up.

  61.

  62. Pausing the clip and rewinding, Peter replays the section and watches closely.

  63.

  64. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Okay, one step at a time.

  65.

  66. Having repeated the chord progressions and notes a few times, Peter looks pleased.

  67.

  68. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): I've been using guitars to compose my songs. I hope I can compose jazz-like songs with the keyboard before long.

  69.

  70. Taking a break, Peter stares at the Clavinova.

  71.

  72. PETER (V.O): It was a new product back in 1987. I wanted to buy it as it wouldn't go out of tune. Sharon supported me.

  73.

  74. INT. LIVING ROOM - 18:15

  75.

  76. Appearing. Peter is pleased to see his WIFE watching the K-drama: Encounter.

  77.

  78. PETER: Which Episode are you watching? I want to catch up.

  79.

  80. WIFE: I'd better go and prepare dinner now. You watch...Which Episode?

  81.

  82. PETER: ...The scene is like a modern Romeo & Juliet masquerade...

  83.

  84. Peter's wife finds the scene for Peter to watch.

  85.

  86. FLASHBACK

  87.

  88. INT. TUNG LOK CINEMA, YUEN LONG - NIGHT

  89.

  90. The screen is showing Romeo & Juliet encountering each other in a masqurade. Peter (15) immerses himself in the story.

  91.

  92. PETER (V.O): What a romantic moment, capturing the excitment of young love...

  93.

  94. Pausing.

  95.

  96. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): It sets in motion the events that will lead to the tragic conclusion.

  97.

  98. RETURN TO PRESENT

  99.

  100. Act 3

  101.

  102. INT. BEDROOM - 21:30

  103.

  104. Smooth jazz music. Peter inserts an AI drawing entitled "The Jazz of Memories..." to a draft in his laptop.

  105.

  106. PETER (V.O): I like Jazz, as it's improvisational, conjuring a sense of spantaneity and emotion.

  107.

  108. Thinking.

  109.

  110. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Jazz often plays with harmonies and dissonances, finding beauty in both.

  111.

  112.  Reflecting.

  113.

  114. PETER (V.O) (Cont'd): Memories, like jazz, can be fluid and complex. Mine resonates with the rhythm and unpredictability of life.

  115.

  116. FADE OUT

  117.

  118. THE END
