FADE IN.
Act 1
INT. BEDROOM - 06:45
Waking up, PETER checks the time.
PETER (V.O.): I don't have to go to court today.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Now is courts' General Adjournment Period. I'm certain that I won't have any court appearance before early April.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): In fact, I've accepted some voluntary work engagements without reservation.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I enjoy my downtime.
Peter pets the sleepy KAJI, the family pet, before getting out of bed.
Act 2
INT. STUDY - 11:15
Opening an envelope, Peter reads a letter.
PETER (V.O.): Oh, am I going to get some dividend shares from this company?
Doubting.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I'm quite certain that I haven't bought the company's shares. How can there be such a mistake?
Peter checks his investment portfolio on screen.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): It isn't on my record; I record every purchase of company shares.
Taking out a big pile of purchase contract notes from a box, Peter checks them one by one.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I recall I was very hesitant to invest in the company's shares.
Holding one note, Peter looks shocked.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Oh! I did buy the company's share! It was last October!
Exhaling deeply.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): How could I have forgotten about that!
Ringtones. Peter takes the call.
PETER (to Phone): ...To appear in court tomorrow? Okay.
INT. MALL - 14:30
Shop front. As Peter's WIFE enters a shop, Peter waits and checks his smartphone.
PETER (V.O.): A Quoran asks me how certain can a person tell if s/he is going to live in the next hour.
Thinking.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Psychologically, a person can be 100% certain that something is true and that the something is actually false.
.
Thinking.
PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Empirically, if a person has been staying alive for the past hours, it's probable that s/he is going to live the next one.
Thinking.
PETER (V.O)(Cont'd): Logically, as the future hasn't come yet, it is possible that a person may or may not live the next hour.
Recalling.
PETER (V.O)(Cont'd): I can't forget the sad facts of a fatal accident case near Nam Hung Tsuen, Yuen Long, in Dec 2019.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O)(Cont'd): I knew the district well as I was the area's squatter control officer in the late 1970s.
Recalling.
PETER (V.O)(Cont'd): A lorry mounted the pavement and knocked dead a 27-year-old pedestrian from behind.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O)(Cont'd): Seconds before the accident, the victim was alive and well...
Pausing.
PETER (V.O)(Cont'd): The only certainty is that nothing is certain.
Sighing, Peter types his answer on the phone screen.
Act 3
INT. BEDROOM - 22:00
Setting clock alarms, Peter sees Kaji appearing.
PETER (to Kaji): You don't expect that I'm earlier than you. Would you lick my face?
Kaji is hesitant.
PETER (V.O): While uncertainty is an uncomfortable position, it allows us to make what's possible a reality.
Pausing.
PETER (V.O)(Cont'd): A reasonably probability is the only certainty.
Peter goes to bed.
PETER (V.O)(Cont'd): Yes, I've to appear in court tomorrow.
