When One Flows

  1. FADE IN

  2. Act 1

  3. INT. STUDY - 9:10

  4. Appearing, PETER taps "Apple-Fm" on a smart phone screen, and we hear stereo music from a pair of flashing Sony Extra Bass speakers.

  5. PETER (V.O.): Oldies can make me smile.

  6. Tapping Quora on another smart phone screen, Peter considers an answer request.

  7. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Asking my opinion on the perfect recipe of a well-balanced sustainable life?

  8. Pausing.

  9. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I believe life goals are to procreate and create so that humans can sustain the life force on Earth.

  10. Thinking.

  11. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): With Nature's mandate, humans should spend half of the time loving, playing and resting, and the other half creating.

  12. As Peter begins to type, Peter hears only the sound of silence.

  13. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Oh, I wasn't aware that the internet radio had been disconnected.

  14. Act 2

  15. INT. STUDY - 11:00

  16. Scrolling up, Peter stops at another Quora answer request: Have you experienced a flow state, and what was it that you're doing?

  17. PETER (V.O.): Yes, it has just happened. Let me do a systematic exposition.

  18. Peter surfs the web.

  19. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Flow is characterized by the complete absorption in what one does, and a resulting transformation of one's time.

  20. Reading.

  21. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): It's different from hyperfocus that can capture a person, side-tracking him or her from other important tasks.

  22. Thinking.

  23. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Being carried on by the flow, a person is focusing wholeheartedly in the moment, controlling the situation and finding the experience rewarding.

  24. Recalling.

  25. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Watching movies in cinemas, I often feel myself being in the zone.

  26. Reading.

  27. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): The flow state engrosses a person with a task at hand. And without making the conscious decision to do so, he or she loses awareness of time, distractions and physical needs.

  28. Recalling.

  29. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Such a state also happens to me when I'm writing legal opinions or decisions, composing songs or editing music videos.

  30. Pausing.

  31. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): For professional and creative tasks, both the challenge level and the skill level are high.

  32. Pausing.

  33. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): With clear objectives and some progress, I'm confident that I can do the tasks well.

  34. Reading.

  35. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): People who are curios, persistent, humble, do something for the sake of it, are more likely to have the optimal experience.

  36. Pausing.

  37. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I do have the self-contained feel and I don't have much expectation of future benefit. I simply want to experience the present.

  38. Reading.

  39. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): But if the job isn't clear, the feedback is delayed, and there's imbalance between capacity and opportunity, it's hard to be in a state of flow.

  40. Pausing.

  41. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): If these issues are addressed, frequent experiences of flow at the workplace can drive productivity, innovation and career development.

  42. Ringtones. Peter picks up the call and engages in a brief conversation.

  43. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I've fixed my professional work coming Monday. The job is clear, the feedback can be immediate, but the skill required isn't high. I won't get any flow.

  44. Pausing.

  45. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): One drawback of the flow state is that a person may become addictive to it and wouldn't be motivated to deal with other life chores.

  46. Ding! Peter checks a notification from the Observatory: Thunderstorm warning extended to 17:00.

  47. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Oh, I mean to experience the state of flow while floating in the beach water later today.

  48. Looking out of the window, Peter sees dark clouds.

  49. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Thunderstorms are too high a challenge for any human.

  50. Act 3

  51. INT. STUDY - 20:00

  52. We hear non-stop music with extra bass sounds from the flashing speakers.

  53. PETER (V.O.): I love listening to oldies, not because of the music or lyrics, but because of my memories behind them.

  54. Pausing.

  55. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): I can get utterly obsessed with something that I'm interested in, like life goals and how to live life.

  56. Thinking.

  57. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): Challenging one's limits to deliver good value can lead to a state of flow.

  58. Thinking.

  59. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): When one flows as life flows, living a fulfilling life can be effortless.

  60. On a smart phone screen, Peter taps "Power Off". The music stops and Peter exits.

  61. THE END

  62. FADE OUT
