Yuen Long: Now & Then

  3. INT. STUDY - 10:00


  4. PETER puts his swimming gear into a bag.


  5. PETER (V.O.): Days ago, a man more than 20 years my junior died while swimming in the sea.


  6. Pausing.


  7. PETER (V.O.) (Cont'd): To swim in the open-air Yuen Long Public Swimming Pool is a good substitute.


  8. Pausing.


  9. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): I had a brief visit of Yuen Long last week and I want to go again now.


  10. Pausing.


  11. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): I'll take public transport again, as I can see the surroundings and not just the roads ahead.


  12. Pausing.


  13. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Let me explore further how Yuen Long has changed over time.

  15. EXT. YUEN LONG, NT - 14: 30


  16. Standing by the door of a moving bus, Peter checks the next stops on a digital display.


  17. PETER (V.O.): The next stop is Yuen Long Police Station, and then Shui Pin Tsuen...


  18. Thinking.


  19. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): The Public Swimming Pool is closer to the Police Station...


  20. After getting off, Peter stares at the departing bus.


  21. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): I don't know if the bus would stop at the same Shui Pin Tsuen stop opposite to Shung Tak College.


  22. Peter walks along Tai Yuk Road.


  23. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): From 1966 to 1971, I used to wait at that bus stop hoping a bus would stop so that I might get on board.


  24. Walking past the entrance of the Police Station on his left.


  25. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): In 1976, I drove in once to settle a traffic accident. I bumped into a car that braked abruptly.


  26. Pausing.

  27. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Prosecuting on fiat now, I've done many traffic cases too.


  28. We see Yuen Long Town Hall on Peter' right.


  29. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): It looks the same. During my matriculation years from 1971-1973, I read here whenever possible.


  30. Stopping at Heung Yee Kuk School, Peter sees a STUDENT in school uniform walking past.


  31. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Is that the Heung Yee Kuk uniform? I can't tell now.


  32. Arriving at the Yuen Long Swimming Pool, Peter notices an old MAN staring at him.


  33. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): When I was in my teens, I wanted people to like me. Now, I'm thinking if I like him.


  34. Swimming pool. We see Peter pausing so that he wouldn't bump into another SWIMMER.


  35. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Swimming in the sea, I don't have to face such a problem.


  36. Later, Peter walks past a row of shops at Kau Yuk Road.


  37. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): It appears that the shop that I used to buy car spare parts from 1976-1980 is still operating.


  38. Peter takes a look of the STAFF inside.


  39. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Young guys...


  40. At the junction between Fung Ning Road and Castle Peak Road, Peter stares at a closed corner premises with signs "To let".

  41. MONTAGE OF PETER'S MEMORIES


  42. A. Same spot - 1980. Toyota showroom. A white Toyota Corolla SR is being displayed prominently. Peter buys it.

  43. B. Same spot - 1989. Nissan showroom. A red Nissan 200SX is being displayed prominently. Peter buys it.


  44. END MONTAGE


  45. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): The sights then were much better than now.


  46. Walking past the Hong Kong Jockey Club at Castle Peak Road, Peter observes the activities inside.


  47. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): From 1976-1980, I placed my Mark Six bets as well as my Dad's here.


  48. Recalling.


  49. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): My Dad dreamt of the winning numbers 1,3, 6, 8,10, 30 of a draw, but knew not when. Betting on every draw, he won a small third price in the end.


  50. Sighing.


  51. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): I wish he was still around now.


  52. Act 3


  53. INT. STUDY - 20:00


  54. Working on a laptop, Peter inserts an AI drawing entitled "Yuen Long: Now & Then..." into a draft.


  55. PETER (V.O): Over time, Yuen Long has undergone a lot of transformation, particularly the rail systems.


  56. Pausing.


  57. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): While the bookshop where I bought my first guitar, the restaurants where I had lunch, and the hawker noodle stalls were all gone, they remain intact in my memory.


  58. Reflecting.


  59. PETER (V.O.)(Cont'd): Via nostalgia, my life now is enriched by a series of "thens".
